Abstract:
Due to their specific mode of operation, military personnel are challenged physically as well as mentally. A sustainable diet focuses on higher intakes of whole plant foods. Sustained periods of high daily energy expenditure coupled with inadequate energy intake are common during most military training and combat operations. Failure to adequately compensate for the high energy expenditure with greater energy intake occurs because there may be inadequate food availability, as the amount of food a service member has to consume may be limited to what they can carry, limited time to eat, the palatability of the foods provided is low and that appetite is suppressed. Consumption of a calcium and vitamin D-fortified food product does not affect iron status during initial military training. Ca/vitamin D supplementation maintains bone health and decreases stress fracture risk during initial military training. The importance of diet and nutrition to military readiness and performance has been recognized for centuries as dietary nutrients sustain health, protect against illness, and promote resilience, performance and recovery. Incorporate more whole grains, beans, legumes, fruits and vegetables into your meals. Reducing fatty red meat and increasing lean proteins such as chicken, seafood, beans and legumes, egg, nuts and seeds can aid in building muscle, losing weight and maintaining a healthy heart. The Government designed and approved a National SDGs framework that envisages a national vision to prioritize and localize SDGs. Localized provincial SDG frameworks are being formulated.
