Abstract:
Bacteriuria associated with pregnancy has a direct bearing not only on the health of the woman, but also on the pregnancy. It increases the risk of pyelonephritis, preterm labour, and low birth weight infants. If untreated, asymptomatic bacteriuria can lead to acute, symptomatic UTI. Present study was planned to find out the incidence of infection in different trimesters of pregnancy. Evaluation of UTI incidence in the first trimester was 27%, in the 2nd trimester was 29.2 and in the 3rd was 27.9%. Only 6-8% of the bacterial growth was observed in urine culture of pregnant women. It is observed that most of the specimen have growth of E.coli and species of Candida. The study found that the incidence of UTI in the different trimester was more or less same. This suggest if this is not economically possible, at least women who have a past history of UT! should be examined as UTI is higher among such women.
