Abstract:
Through this research effort, biodegradation competence of native fungal strains isolated from dyeing unit effluents of paint industry in most populated area of Lahore was examined against discharge of this industry. Five dominant fungal species viz. Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus parasiticus, Aspergillus terreus, Penicillium sp. and Rhizopus nigricans, were identified and selected for this bioremedial studies. All the five species were known to bring bioremediation which had been confirmed by measuring the percentage of reduction potential in different parameters i.e., pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Aspergillus parasiticus showed maximum reduction while Rhizopus nigricans showed least reduction in industrial effluents. Aspergillus parasiticus showed reduction in industrial effluents up to 3.10% in pH, 44.21% in EC and 85.6% in BOD while Rhizopus nigricans showed least reduction up to 38.28% in TDS, TSS 31.75% and COD 60.45% under the optimal condition of studies.
