Abstract:
In this study, fifty cases of intestinal tuberculosis were reviewed for presentations of intestinal tuberculosis and type of surgery performed. These patients were admitted in two and half year period (January, 1996 to June, 1998). Majority of patients were young females and belong to low socio-economic group. Pain in abdomen (100%), sub-acute and acute obstruction (70%) were the prominent modes of presentation. In majority of cases terminal ileum and ileocaecal region were involved. Ileal resection and right hemicolectomy was performed in majority of cases. Not a single non-invasive investigation was helpful. Histopathological examination of biopsy specimen was diagnostic in all cases. In centers where diagnostic facilities are not available, laparotomy is the safest procedure to diagnose as well as manage the intestinal tuberculosis, when present with features of intestinal obstruction.
