Abstract:
The cell-wall polysaccharide of Acanthophora dendroides Harvey, collected from Rameswaram, south India in two seasons i.e. summer and winter of the year, was extracted and studied for its ash, galactose, 3,6-anhydrogalatose and sulphate contents. The cell-wall polysaccharide was also subjected to FT-IR spectroscopic analysis. The results of these analyses are presented and discussed. The extract from this alga shows the spectral characteristics of lambda carrageenan. A comparison with the FT-IR spectrum of commercial lambda carrageenan shows certain spectral features which are peculiar to A. dendroides. There are also differences in spectral features of thalli collected in summer and winter, indicating a seasonal variation in the chemical composition of the polysaccharide.
