Abstract:
Parkinson`s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that is very common in the elderly population. The slow and progressive degeneration of dopamine neurons in the brain is named as the main cause of this disease. Because of the importance of dopamine neuron connections in controlling movement, people with PD progressively develop rigid, jerky and uncontrollable movements. Today, there is no neuroprotective treatment that can suppress the progression of PD, but the available treatments are quite effective in reducing symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease. Levodopa, a dopamine precursor, remains the gold standard treatment and is combined with dopamine agonists or inhibitors of dopamine metabolism. Curcumin is a natural biologically active phenolic compound extracted from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa L. (family Zingiberaceae) with innumerable pharmacological potent. The present study focuses on the evaluation of the therapeutic and preventive effects of curcumin in animal models of PD, using a wide range of behavioral tests and other analytical approaches, as well as a clinical study.
