Abstract:
Carbonate group of minerals is found in abundance in nature. The understanding of their crystal structure has a long history, and with any new technique of analysis, the calcite crystal is always selected for studies. Historical background of explanation of crystal structure and the results of the new technique (TEM) are reviewed along with comments on certain results of other authors. Some new results based on TEM diffraction analyses are included. Our results on rhombohedral carbonates (smithsonite, siderite, ankerite and calcite) show some contradictions to the previous results, Barber and Khan (1987). Also the new super-structures (detected by the presence of 'c" and d type spots in dolomite's reciprocal lattices) for calcite and dolomite crystals and the models for their explanation are presented.
