Abstract:
BALCOFEN is one of the drugs that has shown promise in recent times. Certain studies suggest that this drug reduces spasticity in many patients. BALCOFEN is a derivative of GABA, one of the transmitters in brain and spinal cord. Gaba is known to inhibit the activity of nerve cells. Balcofen probably increases the level of Gaba. However, the mode of action is not established. In decrebate animals it reduced the spasticity greatly. Flexor spasms were markedly reduced. Spasticity also improved in most patients for periods upto a year. The drug can be given as tablets. Side effects are common and include nausea (10%), vertigo, confusion and mood changes. Hypotonia can occur and lead to weakness.
