Abstract:
Cutaneous leishmaniasis is known as oriental sore. It is endemic in Pakistan and there are increasing numbers of cases reported throughout Sindh Province including Karachi. Recent epidemic in Dadu district indicates the importance of the disease. Histopathology is one of the important tools to study the tissue damage caused by the infection but no such studies have been conducted so far in Pakistan. Therefore, we have made the histopathological observations by the preparation of histological sections of the biopsy material from a sore on the leg obtained from a patient of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Material was fixed in formalin. Sections (6-8 micron) were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and mounted permanently in Canada balsam by standard procedures. Photographs of selected sections are included here in support of observations. The main findings were ulceration of the epidermis, destruction of stratum corneum, epidermal hyperplasia with branching down growth of squamours epithelial cells. In dermis several micrograulomas were formed which were larger near the epidermis. In the deeper tissues of the dermis the granulomas were surrounding the blood vessels. The atrophy of collagenous fibres was also seen.
