Abstract:
The higher strength and the hardness of the sand molds produced by CO2-Silicate Process is desirable only upto the moment of solidification of metal in the molds. The knock out operation in complex molds and cores involves a lot of inconvenience due to high residual hardness of the sand mixture and sometimes removal of sand from undercuts and narrow sections becomes almost impossible. This work is aimed at studying and evaluating the suitability of certain materials to be used as Breakdown Agents to combat the problems of knock out faced by foundrymen ever since the discovery of CO2 process. Studies have been focussed on the use of easily available and less costly materials showing suitable breakdown characteristics, such as invert sugar.
