Abstract:
Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan is situated at the foothills of Margalla, which are in close proximity of Main Boundry Thrust (MBT). Satellite image interpretation reveals that a number of lineaments abutting against or cutting across MBT pass through the city of Islamabad. Most of the civil structures have been made in close proximity to these lineaments without any consideration for a special foundation design. The streams originating from the hills surrounding Islamabad have also been blocked by man made structures. Due to urban development, the natural seepage surface area has been drastically reduced which causes above normal surface runoff. Since most of Islamabad represents the catchment area of Nala Lai, this increased runoff is possible cause of flooding in recent years.
