Abstract
We can imagine the disastrous consequences of climate change triggered by fossilfuel based economy and our every increasing desire for a luxurious life style demanding exponential growth in energy supply and consumption. Recent shift towards renewable energy technologies, to mitigate the environmental impacts of carbon based energy supply chain, may be sustained with energy storage technologies such as electrochemical energy storage. Lithium ion batteries despite being the premium electrochemical energy storage devices may not be able to fulfil the future demands of energy storage due to limited resources. Therefore, post-lithium batteries such as multivalent aluminum, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and zinc ion batteries are being explored and commercialized. This work explores vanadium based cathode materials for zinc ion batteries as low cost and environmentally more benign electrochemical energy storage systems. Our focus is to relate material properties obtained from simple synthesis methods such as molten salt and sol gel method with electrochemical performance in multivalent ion batteries.
