Abstract:
To over come the moisture scarcity for germinating seed, a study was carried out to provide appropriate moisture by soaking the wheat seed prior to its sowing which may enhance the germination and plant establishment at early stages of crop growth and development. To ascertain the most appropriate moisture regime, the seeds were soaked for different time intervals and compared with un-soaked seed. The results of study conducted during two consecutive years showed that the crop raised from simple 12 hours (h) seed soaking resulted increased grain yield (19 %) of wheat followed by 12 h soaking and 12 h drying alternatively prior to sowing, produced 11% higher grain yield than the un-soaked control treatment. The lowest yield was obtained in plots where seeds were. kept in plastic bags after soaking prior to sowing indicating the loss of seed vigour and its subsequent effect on plant growth and final grain yield. The effect of seasonality appears to be more prominent than the treatment indicating the dominant agro-climatic effects that prevailed during the crop growth period.
