Abstract:
Anxiety disorders are designated as continuous worry, excessive fear and related behavioral disturbances. Signs are fairly serious, resulting in significant distress or consequential impaired functioning. According to WHO, 70–80% population of the developing countries still believes in non-conventional medicine, predominantly from plant origin and 40% of pharmaceutical formulations consist of natural products. Purpose of Study: The current study was hence designed to assess the anxiolytic activity of the peels separated from the fruits of Trapa bispinosa Roxb., commonly known as water chestnut. The ethanolic extract of the fruit peel was assessed for its anxiolytic activity on Swiss albino mice. The animals were induced with anxiety first. Later on, the prepared peel extract was administered to the animals. The light and dark box model was opted to observe the behavior of animals and the time spent in the brightly illuminated chamber was noted. It was concluded that the Trapa peel has great potential to be used as a natural anxiolytic agent.
