Abstract:
To find out the incidence of Staphylococcal infections in poultry, samples of various internal organs of poultry, eggs, egg shells, litter, water etc. were collected from various sources. The cultural examination of 586 morbid samples consisting of organs like liver, spleen, intestines, trachea, lungs, heart blood etc. revealed organisms like Escherichia coli, Streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. Staphylococcus- aureus was isolated from 25 morbid samples. Similarly Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 10 of 100 chicks, 21 of 230 hatching eggs, 4 of 17 samples of litter, 2 of 8 samples of drinking water, 2 of 15 samples of egg shells and 2 of 27 samples of eye discharge of sick birds. The organism was also isolated from the air of the infected poultry sheds. The biochemical behaviour of the isolate and its pathogenicity was studied in day old chicks and week old birds. The antibiotic sensitivity of the organism was also studied by using the discs of various antibiotics.
