Abstract:
The crop yields are pathetically low in most of the developing countries including Pakistan. Although the productivity can be considerably enhanced through improved sophisticated technologies, these are capital intensive and out of reach for the small land holders, constituting a large community. This paper deals with cheap and simple but improved production technologies suited to the small farmers. It encompasses a newly devised formula named as “CHOWIS” which dovetails the various cultural operations based on good crop husbandry principles, ensuring 1 to 4 times higher per unit area productivity and simultaneously containing or reducing the deleterious effect of various pathogens and unfavorable climatic conditions. This approach is as simple as the Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) developed by WHO for the control of children dysentry and hailed as “potentially the greatest medical advance of the century” by Lance, a well known British Medical Journal. No doubt, the simple techniques are more likely to be understood and adopted by majority of the farmers, proving greater than green revolution in the long run.
