Abstract:
Measurements of P.D. across colon sacs of rat alongwith concomitant measurement of net ion fluxes in a variety of experimental situations led to the conclusion that transmural P. D does not always equal sodium transport as is frequently claimed. A direct relationship between sodium transport and P.D. was observed only following aldosterone treatment while following angiotensin, sodium and fluid transport exceed P.D. Sacs from adrenalectomized or combined adrenalectomized and nephrectomized rats showed a reduced sodium and fluid transport with no change in P. D. while nephrectomy caused an elevated P.D. together with reduced sodium transport.
