A study on psychological well being and neuroticism among internally displaced people from war zones, Khyber Pukhtoon Khwa, Pakistan.

Abstract:
Background & Objectives: Psychological well being of individuals is an indicator of an affluent and well secured society. The tragedy of internal displacement goes beyond statistics, migration to different parts instantly cause people to feel highly vulnerable and deprived. This study was conducted to understand levels of psychological well being and neuroticism among internally displaced persons. Methods: It included sample of 140 individual selected on basis of convenience sampling technique (N=140 internally displaced persons both males and females from IDP camps located in Jalozai, KPK. Neuroticism Scale Questionnaire (NSQ) and Subjective and Psychological Wellbeing scale were used to measure current neurotic tendencies and life satisfaction. Results: Neuroticism was found to be slightly higher than the moderate levels (mean score 5.31). Subjects scored moderately below than average with a mean score of 6.246 on have unpleasant feelings. Happiness, life satisfaction and emotional well being were found to be low with a mean score of 2.44, 1.87 and 2.22 respectively. About 63% of the displaced persons were unable to function normally because their unhappiness served as a distraction. 65% of the displaced population had severe anxiety and among women 57% were in depression. Conclusion: The present research findings suggest that Displaced persons were unable to function normally because their unhappiness served as a distraction. Community counselors or other specialist can help them get moving in the right direction, although positive change will be up to the person. The political awareness at grass root level can be a useful tool in handling conflicts.
