Abstract:
In this broad review, the importance of nanotechnology and its development in Pakistan are presented. Nanotechnology provides better ways of understanding the processes occurring at atomic scale, especially in material sciences. It gives efficient, more sensitive and compatible devices applicable in electronics industry, in metallurgy and medical sciences. Nanophotonics is promising for biomedical applications, such as using quantum dots and nanoshells for targeted therapies. The semiconductor quantum dots with size of the order of blood cells can be injected into the blood to investigate the functioning of healthy and malignant cells. Therefore quantum dots would play an important role in controlling AIDS and cancer. The nanotechnology leads toward developing Carbon Nanotubes employing various techniques. Carbon nanotubes have mechanical properties of extremely stiff and resistant to bending. These properties enable the tubes to be used as the tip for Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) Atomic/Force Microscope (AFM) and electron field emitters. The carbon nanotubes can be fabricated employing various techniques such as Pulsed Laser Ablation, Chemical vapor deposition, arc discharge and high-pressure carbon monoxide (HiPCO). After reviewing the techniques of developing nanotechnology in Pakistan it can be safely claimed that Pakistan has the best potential to fabricate quantum dots and nanotubes.
