Abstract:
The ambiguity of diagnosis of schizophrenia can best be highlighted by studying the list of diagnostic criteria available. No single description seems adequate. The only hope which is likely to solve this riddle and lift the veil is detection of a biological marker for the diagnosis of schizophrenia, may it be in form of a structural change detectable by an imaging technique or a chemical assay possible in a laboratory. The approaches available to date are based on clinical descriptions of signs and symptoms which are apt to have non objectivity and an inherent nonspecificity. Unfortunately the basis of diagnosis are no different to day than what they were, in Kraeplin's a mere clinical impression. Alas, the beartland of psychiatry remains under explored, to make an overstatement.
