Abstract:
Anemia is a common complication of malignancies. Cancer-related anemia may occur as a direct effect of the neoplasm, it may be due to products of the cancer, or it may develop as a result of the cancer treatment itself Present study tried to find nut the level of hematological parameters that may cause anemia in cancer patients, which intern may affect on the prognosis of patients. Seventy five female patients with different sites of malignancy were included in the study. Blood tests including haemoglobin level, differential leukocyte count and platelets count were carried out. It was observed that the level of hemoglobin was more or less same in patients with cancer of breast, ovary and non hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) except in cases of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Percentage of PMN, lymphocyles, monocytes and eosinophils was significantly increased with cancer of different sites of patients except in case of breast cancer. Percentage of platelet counts was significantly decreased in patients with all sites of malignancy except in malignancy of CML as compared to control subjects. The data from this study is consistent with the hypothesis that anemia may be a predictive factor for local recurrence in postoperative chemotherapy in cancer of breast, ovary, CML and NHL. Future prospective trials should be undertaken to confirm the validity of these factors and to elucidate their therapeutic implications.
