Abstract:
Listeria monocytogenes was isolated in 1525 by Murray Webb and Swanri5ETEbits. During the subsequent years the bacterium was isolated from different animals including man ;2,3,4). It occurs in 50 different species of mammals with isolations from ticks, fish and crustaceans. The higher incidence of lister3osis during perinatal period and those over 40 years of age, the increased susceptibility to listeriosis of individuals treated with corticosteroid or the isolation of listeria from persons already suffering from some under lying primary disorders, which result in decreased resistance inspite of the ubiquitous nature of the bacterium the morbidity rate is very low. It is due to the reasons that listeria is difficult to isolate and identify even when there is strong suspection of-clinical listeriosis along with those histological and pathological findings which are strongly suggestive of the disease. Another reason is that 2 different types of listeria strains exist in nature, virulent and avirulent forms. listeria carrier exists in mature even during pregnancy.
