Abstract:
The honey bee, Apis mellifera L. is larger than Indian bee and smaller than rock bee. Their origin is Europe but now-a-days, they are kept commercially throughout the world. In Pakistan this species was introduced during 1976. In order to assess the productivity of honey in different bee farms in district Karak, NWFP, Pakistan the present study was conducted in September 2009. The survey consisted of 12 beekeepers in the Karak. Almost all migratory beekeepers of Karak belonged to different areas of NWFP and other provinces. Karak is ideal location for the production of honey having different bee flora in which Zizipus is abundant throughout the year in this area. Almost all beekeepers kept A. mellifera in Karak. Maximum colonies (161) were establish from Muneer in 2007 belongs to Badraga village and maximum honey (1625 kg/80 colonies) was obtained from Majeed in 2007 belongs Umerzai, Charsadda. In the same area, maximum honey a production, 20.31 kg/colony was in 2007 by Majeed belongs to Ghalani village. In the same area, the minimum production of honey per colony is 2-4 kg and maximum production is 20 kg. The average honey production can be increase in this area by introducing modern techniques of apiculture. The diseases are not so sever, but great damage occurs due to wasps and mites. Abundant bee flora, soil texture, climatic conditions are all favorable for bee keeping in Karak.
