Abstract:
Studies on production potential of maize in relation to geometrical patterns and legume associations was carried out at the Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Single and paired rows of maize with and without intercrops was sown according to factorial in randomized complete block design. Mashbean and mungbean were sown as intercrops. Maize grown in the pattern of double-row strips produced more number of cobs and grains per plant than maize grown in single rows. However, maize grown in association with mungbean produced considerably less number of cobs and grains per plant as compared to that grown either alone or in association with mashbean. Both the geometric patterns had non-significant effect on 1000-grain weight of maize. By contrast, legume association caused significant reduction in 1000-grain weight. Significantly higher grain yield/ha was obtained from maize planted in the pattern of 90 cm spaced double-row strips than that planted in 60 cm spaced single rows in both the years. On to other hand, maize grain yield/ha was reduced to a considerable extent by the association of legumes. Reduction was more pronounced in case of maize mungbean association. However, additional harvest obtained from associated cultures compensated more than the losses in maize production.
