Abstract:
In recent times huge quantities of aggregate from Punjab have been consumed in development projects like roads, bridges and buildings. Some of the old established sources have either been depleted or become uneconomical due to increasing transportation cost and distance from consumption centers. A project has been launched to locate low cost but durable aggregates along the foothill zones of Punjab. Nullah Sanghar is one of the major drainage systems of Suleman Range, which joins River Indus close to the Taunsa. The gravel/boulders are available in the Nullah bed and in terraces, which form the piedmont of Suleman Range. The proposed Sanghar Nullah quarry falls between latitude 30° 40’ to 30° 45’ N and longitude 70° 25’ to 70° 40’ E and covers an area of approximately 36 square kilometer. It has a potential to meet the requirement of aggregate for development projects in close vicinity for a long time. These deposits comprise sub angular to rounded pebbles, cobbles and boulders of limestone, quartzite, sandstone and occasional chertiferous limestone mixed with non-plastic sandy matrix. The samples were tested for their shape, durability, strength and chemical and petrographic characteristics. The coarse aggregate meets almost all engineering tests for use as sub-base, base and cement concrete. However, the quartzite aggregate does not qualify in bitumen adhesion test, which is further confirmed by its hydrophilic characteristics.
