Abstract:
A retrospective study was conducted in the Paediatric Surgical Department of Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar, from January 2000 to December 2002 to find out different types of clinical presentations of Meckle’s diverticulum in children. The last 3 years record was reviewed to note patients presented with and treated for Meckle’s diverticulum’s pathology. Age and sex of patients were analyzed. Operative findings were noted and histological findings were evaluated. Sixty patients were found to have Meckle’s diverticulum pathology, out of which 45 were male and 15 female with a sex ratio of 3:1. Out of 60 cases, 52 (86.6%) had intestinal obstruction, 5 (8.3%) had inflammation while only 3 (5%) were found to have rectal bleeding. Ectopic mucosa was found in 15 cases (25%) of whom 8, 4 and 3 presented with intestinal obstruction, diverticulitis and bleeding respectively. Histologically, gastric mucosa was found in 13 cases, while 2 cases had pancreatic tissue. Our study shows that intestinal obstruction was the main mode of presentation while inflammation and bleeding were seen much less frequently.
