Abstract:
The growth behaviour of Ocimum basilicum Linn. was studied in three light intensities. Full light, partial and complete shade and 3 different spacing 25 x 50 cml, 37.5 x 75 cml and 50 x 100 cml in each light treatment. In full light condition plant show vigorous growth, with maximum number of leaves as compared to the other intensities of light. Plants also give maximum yield of seeds in full light, shade conditions there was no production of seeds. Maximum percentage of oil content were observed in partial shade, there was no significant effect on the Physiochemical characteristics of oil from the seed i. e. showing the same refractive index and specific gravity in full light and partial shade conditions. Mucilage was maximum in full light condition in 50 x 100 cm2 spacing as compared to other spacing and light intensities.
