Abstract:
A survey of nematodes associated with pomegranate was conducted in lower Sindh. Pakistan during January to August 2003. The survey was restricted to 10 localities viz. Badin, Chore Jamali, Garden West (Karachi), Gujjo, Gulshan-e-lqbal (Karachi), Ittehad Town (Karachi), Kotri, Lyari (Karachi). Mirpur Sakro and University of Karachi. Nine nematode genera were recorded from the rhizosphere of pomegranate i.e. Agelenchus sp., Basiria graminophila, Basiroides obliquus, Ditylenchus sp., Helicotylenchus indicus, H. multicinctus, Meloidogyne incognita, Psilenchus hilarulus, Tylenchorhynchus brassicae and Xiphinema basiri. The most dominant species was Meloidogyne incognita followed by Xiphinema basiri. Species diversity (H`) varied and the highest was in Chore Jamali followed by Karachi University campus. Equitability (J`) was highest in Lyari while species richness was maximum in Chore Jamali. The associated nematode fauna with pomegranate is characterised by low diversity, nonetheless some of the nematodes are parasitic and may be deleterious to the crop.
