Abstract:
A commercial process for the manufacturing of zinc based chemicals from the concentrate (61.69% as ZnS) of Besham (NWFP) lead-zinc ore has been developed to produce zinc nitrate, zinc carbonate, zinc oxide and zinc chloride. The Zn exist in the concentrate in the form of sphalerite ZnS into Zn (No3)2 a new chemical technique has been developed with added advantage of recovering elemental sulphur from sphalerite. The rest of Zn-chemicals were produced via zinc carbonate route. The process is highly promising and the recovery of Zn from the concentrate is 95-98% and all the products are of higher purity (92-98%). In addition the process is neither energy intensive nor requires special material of construction for this plant.
