Abstract:
Iron(11) forms a water soluble brownish-red complex with dimethylglyoxime. In neutral medium an equilibrium is established between unreacted ions and complexed iron(II)-dimethylglyoximate. Addition of ammonia or any other basic in shifts the equilibrium towards right and absorbance due to iron(Il)-dimethylglyoximate is enhanced. Increase in the absorbance may be used to detect and determine the added basic material. The potential of the system for quantitative determination of a number of basic ions like hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate and phosphate has been explored and a procedure for the determination of ammonia is described.
