Abstract:
The root and nodule cortex of podocarpus spp. has been studied with respect to the cells, when old, undergo degenerative processes and develop bars or reticulate thickenings on the cell wall. Thus, the loss of cell contents and deposition of bar-like thickenings on the walls does not appear to be peculiar. to podocarpus alone but is rather a common feature of cortical cells of many gymnosperm, . Observations by light and electron microscopes on the development of these bars on cortical cells of the podocarpus root system were recorded for the first time. Protoplasmic streaming was not observed but the formation of localized thickenings coincided with the localized cytoplasmic accumulations.
