Trends of Neural Tube DEffects Incidence in Asir Province, Southern Region of Saudi Arabia

Abstract:
Aim: To assess the trends of incidence of open neural tube defects (ONTDs) in southern region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: Meta analytic, retrospective study was conducted. All the previous studies reporting incidence of NTD in Asir province Saudi Arabia were selected and their data were compared. Result: 1995-1997 overall incidence was 0.72 per thousand live births where as in year 1995 to 1999 the incidence was 0.78/1000 live births and during the period of 2003-2007 the incidence was 0.63 ONTDs / 1000 births. Conclusion: A decreasing trend was found in ONTDs incidence in Asir Province, Saudi Arabia. Males are more at risk than females.
