Comparative Study of Raw and Magnetic Biochar for Heavy Metal Adsorption: A Case of Parthenium hysterophorus L. Biomass

Abstract:
Since last two decades due to most of the anthropogenic activities the environment became polluted which pollute directly or indirectly water which has very alarming effects. To decrease this pollution, there are lot of techniques which are used for the removal of pollutants but most of them are very costly, and they need special management. In modern scientific era the use of biochar is considered as one of the most reliable and effective technique which play the most important role as bio-adsorbent for the removal of different pollutant like pesticides, organometallic compounds and heavy metals. In the present study biochar is produced from Parthenium hysterophorus L. biomass and modified with iron chloride before and after production to produce magnetic properties and investigate the adsorption properties of modified and non-modified biochar. The batch adsorption experiment of four heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Cd and Pb) demonstrated that the adsorption of heavy metals on modified biochar was lower. Raw biochar adsorbed Cr, Cu, Cd and Pb 20%, 100%,90%,98% at pH 7 respectively. Modified biochar absorbed Cr, Cu, Cd and Pb 90%, 60%,65% and 58% at pH 7 respectively. And comparatively the adsorption capacity of post modified biochar was slightly higher than the pre modified biochar. But the adsorption of anions were three times higher on modified biochar than raw biochar i.e. Chromium (HCrO3-). Magnetic modification of biochar is more efficient for the removal of anions than cations.
