Abstract:
Varieties of wheat available in West Pakistan are Mexipak 65, Chenab 70, Nortino etc. which are dwarf or medium tall and are capable to absorb high doses of Nitrogen and P205 fertilizers. A common ear of Mexipak may have 22-25 spikelets and 60-80 grains per spike. Wheat species like Triticum turgidum have branched ears bearing twice the number of grains of an average wheat variety Transfer of branched earing to the common wheat, Triticum aestivum, has been attempted through hybridization and a few lines have been isolated in the Agricultural University, Lyallpur. The variety AUT-571-4 bears more than 100 grains per ear, which could be increased through controlled sterility and restoration of fertility. Intergenetic crosses involving. Triticum aestivum and rye has resulted in Triticale which displays high fertility, plump grains and higher number of grains per ear. One of the approaches to improve the yield is the production of hybrid seeds on a large scale.
