The Kinetics of methoxide-catalyzed geometric isomerization of Methyl (Z)-O-Methylbenzohydroximate.

Abstract:
The kinetics of base (methoxide)-catalyzed geometric isomerization of the title compound (1) has been studied. The kinetic data have been found to follow second order rate equation. From the data obtained, formation of tetrahedral intermediates (iT and 2T) through nucleophilic addition and stereomutation has been implicated. A mechanism involving nucleophilic catalysis has been proposed for methoxide-catalyzed geometric isomerization around carbon-nitrogen double bond in 1.
