Abstract:
The (I,V) characteristics of a locally designed three electrode ionization chamber filled with argon gas at 190 psi have been studied for high energy gamma-rays from 16N produced nuclear reactors. The reactor power was 9 MW and coolant (light water) flow was 1000 m3/h. Our measurements show that the chamber can be operated at 1000 volts. The slope in the plateau region is 0.1% per 100 volts which is highly satisfactory. (I/I, I/V) and (I, I/v2) analysis has been done to estimate the losses due to initial (columnar) and general (volume) recombinations. The initial recombination losses are 2.8% and the volume recombination losses are 2.1% if the operating voltage is 1 kV. If the operating voltage is increased to 2kV then the initial losses are 1.6% and general losses are 0.94%.
