Abstract:
Pakistan can be divided into six watershed regions, grouped to the north and the west around the vast alluvial plain of the Indus. Of these, the most important are the mountainous areas which yield water after it is received in the form of snow or rain. Moreover, with proper management, significant portions of these areas can provide additional agricultural land in the country. The development and well-being of these areas is thus important for several reasons. The rehabilitaion of watersheds is being attempted at present by the following agencies: Directorate of Soil and Water Conservation, Punjab (uplands of Punjab); Punjab Forest Department (Murree/Kahuta tehsils of Rawalpindi distrct; Water and Power Development Authority (catchments of Mangla and Tarbela reservoirs); NWFP Forest Department (Mansehra and Abbottabad districts of Hazara Civil Division); Kohistan Development Board (earthquake affected areas of Indus Kohistan including Swat, and Hazara Kohistan.
