Abstract:
Most modern drugs are selectively toxic compounds exercising their therapeutic benefits by poisoning of offending agents, but not without some effects on other structures. Normally any serious side effects, are avoided by progressive detoxication and metabolisation of the drugs by e.g. biotransformation or conjugation, based on certain enzyme systems. The latter may be lacking in pregnancy, during intrauterine life or in the neonatal period, with resultant greater vulnerability to drugs.
