Abstract:
Over the past 3 years (June, 1997 to May, 2000) 160 patients of chronic liver diseases (OLD) were included in a prospective study in Sandeman Provincial Hospital Quetta, to determine the spectrum of chronic liver diseases in Balochistan. Hepatitis C as the major cause of chronic liver diseases was found in 40% cases whereas hepatitis B was positive in 36 % cases. Both the viruses were positive in 7% cases and negative in 17% cases of chronic liver diseases as a whole. Hepatitis C was found in 40 % cases of chronic hepatitis, 44 % cases of cirrhosis of liver, and in 31 % cases of hepatocellular carcinoma, whereas hepatitis B was positive in 38%, 28% and 48% respectively. It reports hepatitis C as a leading cause of chronic hepatitis and cinhosis of liver and hepatitis B as the major contributing factor in hepatocellular carcinoma As chronic liver diseases are very common in Pakistan and is a major community problem, accurate data and effective measures against the spread of these diseases are needed at primary health care level
