Abstract:
The great variety of forms and the plurality in their numbers with intense multiplying capacities have immensely enriched the diatom flora of this coast. There is divergence in the pattern of annual distribution each year. The annual cycle, as observed, is characterised by the increasing tendency for flowering and bloom, first by the middle of August till the beginning of October followed by a minor peak of individual species during December-January and subsequently followed by a steady increase from the month of February till the end of April or May. The diatom bloom of individual species has been noticed occasionally, during this period. The species succession also occurs but environmental differences influence the relative importance of certain species from year to year. The dinoflagellates maxima were not totally distinct from the diatom maxima. The composition of species is described and discussed from the standpoint of dominant species, seasonal succession and comparison with the conditions of the Indian coast.
