Abstract:
Technology development deals with special class of development projects where the deliverable is new knowledge, new technology, or a technical capability. This rare class of projects is crucial for any enterprise particularly for a research and development (R & D) concern to gain competitive effectiveness. The technology development projects involve higher risks and longer development times. Risk aversive conventional methods of managing product development therefore, are not well suited to an enterprise embracing technology development. The fog and friction that prevail in a combat situation also exist in technology development domain. Modern organizations therefore, have to diligently embrace the risks and provide mechanism to combat the fog and friction of technology development. Consistency of objective innovations through technology development projects are the hallmarks of technologically competitive organizations. This paper first briefly introduces the development projects and presents the significance of the inherent fog and friction in this class of projects. It then delineates methods that would assist the executives and the technology managers to steer through the uncertainty of technology development by fostering creativity centered culture for long term strategic and near term tactical competitive advantages.
