Abstract:
Acute liver failure is a catastrophic clinical syndrome occurring as a result of massive necrosis of liver cells or following any other cause of sudden, severe impairment of liver function. It is characterized by progressive jaundice, shrinkage of liver size, and a variety of neuro-psychiatric abnormalities. The common a etiology of this syndrome in this country is viral hepatitis. The prognosis of acute liver failure due to viral hepatitis is more serious as compared to other causes with mortality rates as high as 80 to 90 percent. Some common complications are gastro-intestinal haemorrhage, hypoglycaemia and electrolyte abnormalities.
