Abstract:
The flow over a backward-facing step is a standard benchmark case in CFD. Although simple in configuration, the backward facing step problem provides a number of ways in understanding complex flows. The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is a promising technique for complex flow simulations, as the known turbulence models based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations are limited. In this paper the flow over a backward facing step is simulated at Re =5100. The earlier flow field predictions for this problem provide a motivation to investigate the complex flow further in detail via the anisotropy invariant theory of Lumley & Newman [15].
