Abstract:
Describes the treatment of cholera based on two premises: (1) Water and electrolytes lost in the stool must be replaced by intravenous infusion containing NaC1 and NaHCO3; and (2) the duration of the infection must be shortened with antibiotic therapy. Tetracycline is of proven value. If the recommended measures are carried out, mortality from cholera can be reduced to zero, even under trying epidemic. conditions. The problem in cholera therapy is a logistic one that of making the necessary materials and skilled personnel available at the time and place of an out break of the disease.
