Abstract:
Towflex arrays of small length were manufactured by assembling in the respective core tubes, the commercially available and the new indigenously developed hydrophones. Calibrated acoustic sound source was used to determine their relative sensitivities. Digital data recorder was employed to record the sound source and tow noise data onboard a towing platform. The measured data was processed with MATLAB and a real time digital signal processor. Results have been compared which reveal that the performance of the Towflex array with indigenously developed new hydrophones is better than the one housing commercially available hydrophones wherein the broad band sound source is intercepted with relatively higher amplitude even at opening out distance from the tow path. Likewise the processed data indicates that the Towflex array having newly developed hydrophones have significantly reduced acceleration pickups. Here also the performance of the pre amplifiers working in tandem with the newly developed hydrophones indicates their low noise attributes. Systems engineering aspects of integrating the hydrophones in the array have been analyzed with the view to identify effects on performance of the array subsystems as a whole.
