Abstract:
To measure and to evaluate the effect of bromocriptine on the concentration of uric acid in infertile women with hyperprolactinema. Methods: Sixty infertile women, who had serum prolactin concentration at least twice the upper limit of normal values participated in this study. Serum prolactin and uric acid concentrations were measured before and after giving bromocriptine 2.5 mg orally daily. Results: A significant reduction of serum prolactin level (48.04±24.14 to 12.61±11.79) was seen after treatment with bromocriptine. Normalization of serum prolactin levels was achieved in 52 (86.7%) patients. A significant drop of uric acid was noted after treatment with bromocriptine. Mean serum uric acid concentration of 378.4±29.64 µmmol/L decreased to 365.88±27.34 µmmol/L after bromocriptine therapy. Conclusions: Serum uric acid concentration is high in infertile hyperprolactinemic women. Bromocriptine may have an effect on uric acid excretion, suggesting a hypouricemuic effect of this drug. .
