Abstract:
The indus Basin Project being handled by the West Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) when completed at a cost of some £ 360m., will be one of the world's greatest irrigation schemes. As a part of the scheme a contract worth £ lm has been awarded to Hunting Technical Services Ltd. by Pakistan to complete the drainage and salinity control investigations. Rising water tables and spreading soil salinity have been steadily reducing the agricultural output of the 23m irrigated acres (9.3m hectares) of the indus plains. The object of the Hunting Survey is to study the means for an initial lowering of the water-table to a safe level and thereafter to control it at that level, which now follows the dealing with -salinity by 'washing' the soil with heavy applications of irrigation water. All engineering and technical aspects relating to this project have been explained in detail. The link canal system to redistribute waters of the indus is another gigantic effort being made by Pakistan. The scheme will consist of seven canals linking the indus, Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej rivers.
