Abstract:
Thermal transport properties of synthetic porous insulators are measured as a function of applied pressure at constant temperatures. Three samples namely foam, closed cell foam and fibre glass are subjected to external pressure, taking into consideration the compressibility of the samples and the requirements of the technique (Transient Plan source) used. These materials are used for insulation for temperature control of air-conditioned space and other electronic appliances, so they are helpful in reducing energy losses. These three samples have values of thermal conductivity in the range (0.024-0.087) Wm-1 K-1 and heat capacity per unit volume (0.04-0.14) Mjm-3 K-1, with an experimental error not more than 2%. Foam and fibre glass work successfully as good heat insulators in extreme conditions of stress (maximum 108.65 kPa for the foam and 116.33 kPa for the fibre glass, minimum 0.01 mb for both). Hence the foam is a best choice, in three samples used in the experiment, for thermal isolation under the extreme conditions of pressure.
