Abstract:
WMN (Wireless Mesh Networks) are emerging as a promising technology for providing reliable, scalable and robust wireless broadband access. However, like any communication network, the true potential of WMN cannot be exploited without adequately addressing the security issues. In this paper, the authors proposed a novel reliable and low latency framework for WMN. They provide the services of authentication and trust establishment using an extension of the 802.1X protocol over EAP. The framework uses a novel piggybacked challenge response protocol for providing link level data confidentiality and data integrity at the MAC (Message Authentication Code) layer. The challenge-response mechanism also provides for per packet authentication. In addition, end-t-end data confidentiality and data integrity is realized at the network layer. They also demonstrate that their framework is robust against a variety of security attacks. Finally, they evaluate their framework through simulation based experiments and compare its performance against IEEE 802. 11i in terms of the latency induced by the security components.
