Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of and results of surgery, in, the patients who present with urinary retention due to cauda equina compression by lumbar disc prolapse. STUDY DESIGN: Observational study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 22 patients, who presented with urinary retention due to lumbar disc disease, were selected for this study during a period of two years with a post operative follow up of one year. All the patients were operated with bilateral, fenestration and removal of the offending disc(s). Clinical characteristics of these patients are analyzed. Results of surgery are evaluated for change in pre operative symptoms, bladder sensation, perianal sensations, anal sphincter tone and post micturition residual volume of urine on ultrasound examination of urinary bladder: RESULTS: Majority of the patients were catheter independent within 10 days. 90% of the patients had less than 50cc of residual volume of urine at the end of one year after surgery. Perianal sensation to pinprick and anal sphincter tone were slower to recover: CONCLUSION: Prognosis of recovery of urinary function due to cauda eyuina compression by lumbar disc prolapse is favorable after surgery.
